My 2023 Running Year in Review: Paris, Great North Run, and Lanzarote Marathon

As we approach the end of 2023, I find it fitting to take a moment to reflect on what has been a year full of running adventures, challenges, and unforgettable experiences. From the historic streets of Paris to the bustling energy of the Great North Run, and the scenic coastal paths of Lanzarote, each race has been a unique chapter in my running journey.

Paris Marathon: A Run Through History

The year began with the ambitious goal of running the Paris Marathon. The allure of running in such an iconic city was irresistible. However, training didn’t go as planned, and this was evident during the race. Despite the challenges, running along the Champs Elysees was an exhilarating experience that I’ll always cherish. The beauty and history of Paris provided a backdrop that made every mile memorable.

The Great North Run: A Celebration of Running

Our annual participation in the Great North Run, our seventh to date, was as exciting as ever. Being part of one of the world’s largest half marathons, with nearly 60,000 entrants, is truly special. The atmosphere is electric; the local community’s enthusiastic support, shouting encouragement as we ran, made it a uniquely uplifting experience. This year’s race was marked by extreme weather – starting in sweltering heat and ending with an apocalyptic rainstorm, a dramatic end to an unforgettable race.

Lanzarote Marathon: An Impromptu Adventure

After having to withdraw from the New York Marathon, Gayle and I made a last-minute decision to run the Lanzarote Marathon. With around 600 runners, it was a smaller but equally rewarding race. The route, mostly along the coast, offered beautiful views, although a stretch through an industrial estate provided a stark contrast. Overall, the friendly atmosphere and well-organized event left a positive impression, and I’m even considering the half-marathon version for a future race.

A Shift in Focus

Reflecting on these experiences, I’ve decided to take a break from marathons and focus on shorter distances like 10k and half-marathons. This decision comes as I balance my new job and commute, which has undoubtedly impacted my training regime.

Looking Ahead to 2024

Next year, I’m excited to return to the Great North Run. Additionally, I’ll be participating in the 5k during the Chicago Marathon weekend, cheering on Gayle as she tackles the marathon. I’m also on the lookout for other races to join, expanding my running horizons.

Adapting to Change

This year has taught me the importance of flexibility and adaptation, both in running and life. Balancing a demanding job with training has been a learning curve, and it’s a challenge I aim to manage more effectively in the coming months.

As we bid farewell to 2023, I’m grateful for the experiences, the lessons learned, and the running community’s unwavering support. I look forward to sharing more adventures with you all in 2024.
